Friday 13th February 2015 Dr. David Myles Gavine
David Myles Gavine (b. 1937) is a Scottish astronomy historian. An avid amateur astronomer, he has compiled and published sightings of aurora and noctilucent clouds. His doctoral dissertation was on the history of astronomy in Scotland, 1745 -1900.
Following a short, but not as short as promised, description of a few humerous e-mails sent and received by Tony, David discussed the types of variable stars and the methods of measuring their brightness and periods of their cycles. The talk was well illustrated with diagrams and photo's showing these methods in a practical way.
Our thanks to Dave for an excellent and informative talk.
After a brief break for refreshments Alan Clitherow showed some examples and described his methods for taking long exposure photographs of nebulae and deep space objects. He is currently experimenting with various ideas and new image manipulating programmes. We hope to have some pictures of his work soon. Thanks Alan.
